Sonology In Concert #3:
A presentation of current work of students from the
Sonology department of the Conservatory of the Hague. These concerts showcase the newest and best works by young electronic musicians using the most advanced digital means with tape pieces, live electronics and video.

Tape Piece
This composition is an expanded version of a 60" electro-acoustic piece entitled
terminal_5. The
terminal_5 material appears in its entirety, albeit filtered and distorted, as the kernel of
terminal_expansion. While the latter work concerns itself with five contrasting modes of projection of a uniform duration (12"), employing both source-material and processes derived from four recent pieces for chamber ensemble, the former amplifies, contorts, blurs, etc. etc. such materials and procedures, across eight sections of diverse durations (6"- 3'30) and internal structures.
Although neither piece is exactly conceived as a sort of
“music for airports”,
terminal_5 was largely composed during a layover in Heathrow.

Baltijos Kelias (en. Baltic way) relates to an event which occurred on August 23, 1989 when approximately two million people joined their hands to form a 600 kilometer human chain across the three Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The demonstration was to draw the world's attention to the common historical fate which these countries suffered. It marked the 50th anniversary of August 23, 1939 when the Soviet Union and Germany (in the secret protocol of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact) divided spheres of interest in Eastern Europe, which led to the occupation of these states. The piece is an attempt to express my personal memories of participating in that event. However, it is not a narration, but a flashback to the atmosphere that was created by 2 million people showing their solidarity. The piece was produced in BEA5, the analogue studio of the Sonology department.

"Fragments" is an experiment in density. It is a work in progress presentation of a close collaboration between a performer, a composer and a designer.
The Institute of Sonology is one of the first highly specialised historical centres for electronic and electro-acoustic music with a history that goes back to the 1950's, at the Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven. Here, early productions emphasised functional music for animated film, ballet, exhibition areas, and early experimental popular music. Later the school was moved to Utrecht University and since 1986 it has been at the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag. Many important composers have worked in the studios, including Dick Raaijmakers, Gottfried Michael Koenig and Konrad Boehmer. The school is particularly noted for it's early development in the use of computers as aids to composition and it's superb voltage controlled analogue studio. The research that takes place in such institutions is always at the cutting edge of composition, computing and technology, and many techniques that were developed in these environments are now in common usage in more popular forms of music. Sonology In Concert offers a chance to hear a broad spectrum of the newest performance and compositional techniques in one concert setting.
