Opening of James Beckett's Palace Ruin

with The International Nothing

From August 26 to October 14, Zuidas hosts a temporary ruin as James Beckett reconstructs a fragment of the former Paleis voor Volksvlijt. Having gone up in flames in 1929, an archival photo shows a flank of the building amid a haze of smoke and debris, just after attempts to douse the fire. Beckett recreates this moment in the form of a large sculpture—part horror house, part memorial—which later functions as a stage for thematic concerts, programmed by Seamus Cater and Natalia Dominguez Rangel (in association with DNK Amsterdam), and an architectural lecture series.

You are cordially invited to join us for the opening and concert on August 26, 2016, 5pm.

Dirk van Weelden will open the artwork. Van Weelden, a philosopher and writer is a founding member of the N.A.P. - Nederlandse Academie voor ‘Patafysica, aka Bâtafysica. His interest in Beckett’s ruin ties in with his work for Het Instituut, a foundation actively finding new forms outside of academia and art institutions in which artists, architects and designers can engage with people from different disciplines around social issues and (urban) planning questions.

This will be followed with a concert by “The International Nothing”, a great favourite of DNK having played twice earlier in our series. The International Nothing (Kai Fagaschinski and Michael Thieke) a psycho-acoustic clarinet duo from Berlin, play in a pipe-organ style merging their two clarinets into one complex sound. Ironically, this often sounds like more than two voices, as multi-phonics and difference tones emerge. Their empirical composition style touches on delicacy, pleasure, humour and the utmost aural precision.

Palace Ruin can be found at the Gustav Mahlerplein, immediately outside of the Amsterdam Zuid station.
