The Names is a project by Amsterdam and Berlin-based composer and bassist Koen Nutters, it combines the playing of musical material with reflections on public space, society and the world of ideas as a whole.
Seamus Cater - harmonica
Marielle Groven - violin
Koen Nutters - acoustic bass guitar, melodica
Gert-Jan Prins - percussion
Using a self-designed system, Nutters translates the names of icons of social activism and progressive musicians (Angela Davis, George Lewis, Michelle Alexander and Anthony Braxton) into musical notes. Each person's unique “melodic code” thus naturally produces its own melodic and harmonic material.
Nutters has drawn inspiration from 1960s jazz harmonies, among other things, which he abstracts into musical question marks and multilayered harmonic areas for the musicians to improvise within.
The music is often complemented by spoken word excerpts from socially engaged poetry or lyrics.
Orquesta del Tiempo Perdido is a somewhat high-sounding, slightly nostalgic, somewhat provocative name, behind which lies the visionary mind of Jeroen Kimman, one of the most original musicians on the Dutch scene. Kimman makes a rare appearance with solo guitar and voice!
